New research indicates that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication explain a intense return of cravings.
"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle support.
